7th and 8th Grade Classroom Meetings
| May 8, 2012 | Posted by sgreene under Uncategorized |
I have started running a casual Classroom Meeting for the 7th and 8th grade students along with the help of Sr. Audrey and Miss Sandwisch. We meet Monday mornings for approximately 30 minutes to discuss the upcoming transition into high school for our many 8th graders. 7th graders are benefitting from this as well as high school is not so far off for them either.
So far we have discussed fears about going into high school or a new school and “fitting in” in high school. The students know that these discussions are open and while I have some plans regarding what to address; students are free to bring up any topic they like. Encourage your child to ask questions during these meetings or come to me privately so that I can address their question.
So far the 7th and 8th graders have been great participators and are quite supportive of one another during these meetings.
Topics will be further discussed during social skills as the transition from middle to high school can be a tough one.
Great Job 1st and 2nd!!

The 1st and 2nd graders discussed teamwork this week in social skills. During a game similar to “pin the tail on the donkey” I saw so much teamwork the first round that I did not need to add “helping the blindfolded” as a rule to the second round.
We also created a mural as a team. The cooperation and collaboration I saw with the students to finish the project was the best I have seen in social skills this year. And the mural turned out BEAUTIFUL!!
ATTENTION 6TH AND 7TH GRADE FAMILIES!!!
| March 23, 2012 | Posted by sgreene under Uncategorized |
A brief survey was sent home in the 6th and 7th grade families’ Wednesday folders. This survey discussed parent nights for NEXT school year. Please be sure and fill it out if you have interest; as speakers will be invited based on the number of families interested.
Respect Lesson
| March 23, 2012 | Posted by sgreene under Uncategorized |
7th and 8th grade students discussed respect this week. A respect cloud visual was used to display how our actions and words slowly rip pieces of this “respect cloud” away.
Students also thought about and discussed characteristics of people that they highly respect as well as individuals that they do not have much respect for.
A letter was written by each student to someone that they have shown DISRESPECT to in the past. This was a thought provoking activity!
Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention
| March 2, 2012 | Posted by sgreene under Uncategorized |
The 5th through 8th grade went deeper this week in our discussion about drug and alcohol use and abuse. I encourage you to discuss what was learned with your child as prevention is most possible through open communication
5th-8th Grade Health Unit
| February 24, 2012 | Posted by sgreene under Uncategorized |
This week was the last week for the health unit that I have been teaching in the social skills classroom. I encourage parents to have a discussion with your child about what was learned as some of it was brand new and a little scary. Please do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions or concerns.
“I feel…” Statements
| February 8, 2012 | Posted by sgreene under Uncategorized |
3rd and 4th grade have been practicing using “I feel…” statements when someone is bugging them instead of tattling. Visual reminders are posted in their classroom as well as the hallway and social skills room. Keep working on “being the boss of you” 3rd and 4th grade!
Practice using “I feel…” statements at home too…teach brothers and sisters how to use them
Self-Esteem Masks
| February 2, 2012 | Posted by sgreene under Uncategorized |
1st and 2nd grade students discussed self esteem today. We talked about some ways in which to boost self esteem as well how it is normal to have days that we forget about saying nice things to ourselves.
For those days when our self esteem is lower, we made self esteem masks. These masks were beautifully decorated by the students along with reminders of what they are good at or like about themselves. Fun activity! Thanks 1st and 2nd grade for constantly surprising me with your creativity
Door Decorating
| January 27, 2012 | Posted by sgreene under Uncategorized |
All teachers and students are participating in the door decorating contest for Catholic Schools Week. The theme in the Social Skills classroom is “God gave us the first social skills teacher…Jesus!”
Students have added their ideas to the door by drawing pictures of themselves talking to God and finding Bible verses that talk about social skills, then interpreting them into their own words. The door looks great! Way to think deeper Mary Immaculate students
